Buyer - Houseplants and Bedding Plants Dobbies Head Office, Melville Nursery, Lasswade, Midlothian, EH18 1AZ

We currently have an opportunity for two Buyers to join our Plant team, both roles of which will be based in our Central Support Offices at Lasswade.  

As a key member of the plant team, you will be required to assist the Senior Plant Buyer in developing and delivering commercial and aspirational ranges that will maximise sales and business opportunities whilst achieving target margin parameters.

You must also be able to work on your own initiative as well as part of a team.  As an integral member of the Purchasing team, you will be customer focussed and flexible.  You will also be able to form good working relationships at all levels and enjoy working in a fast paced, demanding and varied environment.

The successful applicants must be passionate in their field and able to demonstrate a high degree of computer literacy with a meticulous, organised and pragmatic approach to their workload with a keen eye for accuracy.

Key Responsibilities will include:

  • Assisting the Senior Plant Buyer in range planning, discussing historical and future sales data with the Merchandiser to propose the range structure to meet and exceed our targets.
  • Assisting in the preparing for "Lessons Learnt" & Strategy meetings and Range Reviews in line with the agreed buying calendar, to the Purchasing Director.
  • Liaising with nurseries and growers in the management of the supply base, ensuring all critical paths are up to date, samples delivered on time, delivery issues are minimsed, etc.
  • Ensuring that the finalised range delivers maximum customer experience, taking into account space planning, best sellers, curent and future trends, linked sales and targets margins in line with buying and sourcing policies.
  • Assisting the Senior Buyer in negotiations and setting up of a robust trading plan and promotional calendar.
  • Liaising with Marketing, PR and Online teams to instigate strong and aspirational trading plans both in-store and online, including promotional activity and special events.
  • Submitting POS requests to the marketing team in a timely fashion so that all signage is generated and issued on time.
  • Working closely with the Senior Buyer and BMA to complete set up packs ensuring deadlines are met.
  • Assisting the Buyer in managing retail price changes and ensure these are accurately communicated to the BMA.
  • Provide CSO teams with timely feedback on key operational issues affecting trade/performance.
  • Working closely with stores to ensure the smooth running and success of the department including involvement with the weekly horticulture calls, liasing with store and operational teams and taking action to deal with any issues that arise.
  • Working with Visual Merchandising and Marketing to ensure vision of ranges are translated in stores for maximum customer experience.
  • Undertaking business travel to nurseries, trade shows, in-store training days, garden centre visits and competitor stores as required.

Skills and Experience Required:

  • Ideally, possess buying experience within a multi-site retail business.
  • Knowledge of advanced level of Excel is desirable but training will be provided.
  • Proven experience of planning and delivering successful product ranges.
  • Possess good understanding of supply chain processes.
  • Successful track record of buying and/or developing commercial products.
  • Proven track record in hitting KPI targets.
  • Strong interpersonal skills - can communicate articulately and effectively in writing and verbally.
  • Possesses strong negotiations skills.
  • Experience of range and supplier management, trade planning and strategic planning.
  • Possesses commercial and financial acumen.
  • Strong analytical and decision-making skills.
  • Able to work collaboratively and build effective relationships.
  • Resourceful in their approach to resolving day to day operational issues and queries.
  • Highly organised with a flexible approach to work.
  • Resilient and reosurceful with a "can do" attitude with the ability to respond to reactive situations.
