Assistant Food Buyer (Retail)

Role Overview

Here at Dobbies Garden Centres, we are looking for an experienced and enthusiastic Assistant Food Buyer to join our team.  Based in central England (either Atherstone, Shrewsbury or Cirencester) the role will report into the Senior Food Buyer at our Edinburgh Head Office.  The Assistant Food Buyer will be a key member of the team, producing and impementing the business development plans for all things food.  You will have experience in Fresh, Artisan & Ambient Food Buying and Grocery Retail.

Together with a successful team of passionate foodies, you will support the head office team to assess the commercial performance of current ranges, reviewing and acting upon market trends and review competitors offerings.  You will support the development of the range as well as supplier strategies for the regional retail food portfolio.

We are looking for an ambitious Assistant Food Buyer who is keen to progress the role quickly.  The role will be based in either our Atherstone, Cirencester or Shrewsbury centres with nationwide / European travel as and when required.

Assistant Food Buyer (Retail) - Key Responsibilities

  • Assess the commercial performance of the current retail food range, market trends and opportunities.
  • Review and analyse current price points, margin performance, competitor price positioning and retailer margin versus budget.
  • Support the development of promotional strategies to drive sales, profitability and VFM offers.
  • Source Product Supply.
  • Ensure we are leveraging our buying power effectively.
  • Build strong relationships with key stakeholders and suppliers.
  • Working cross functionally with key business departments such as marketing, finance, operations etc.
  • Work closely with the in-house technical manager to ensure quality standards are maintained.
  • Deliver analytics and reports to the business as required.

About You

  • Minimum of 2 years purchasing experience preferably in a retail food role.
  • Accurate and detail oriented with exceptional communication, negotiation and influencing skills.
  • Team player who is creative, open minded, methodical and passionate about their role.

Our Assistant Food Buyer will be solutions driven and have extensive experience of managing multiple projects.  A skilled negotiator and influencer you will thrive in a fast paced, demanding environment and will be comfortable working in a variety of communication styles.  The successful candidate will ideally possess a background gained from the leisure, hospitality or retail sector although this is preferred rather than essential. Our Assistant Food Buyer will push hard when needed to improve key business processes.
